| Previously known as Uttaranchal until 2007, Uttarakhand came into statehood on November 9, 2000 as the 27th State of India.
Tibet borders to the North, Nepal to its east and the State of Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in the west and south respectively. Uttarakhand means united north or undivided north (Uttar=North / Akhand=undivided).
This is the land of the Sadhus, the holy rivers, the Yoga and Yogis, the mighty snowcapped Himalayas.
The Himalayan peaks and its valleys were well known in ancient times and considered as the abode of gods. It was and still considered a sacred land as many holy rivers can be found here of which the Ganges remains the most worshiped river of the world. There are numerous pilgrimage places for the Hindus of which some requires hard trekking into the Himalayans mountains. Every year thousands of pilgrims throng to this place from India and abroad.
For the foreigners it is the Land of Moksha, mediation, Yoga and a spiritual retreat, (The world famous band Beatles carried their inspiration from this land) as well as the land of hardcore adventure like trekking, mountaineering, white water river rafting and wildlife.
The Nanda Devi Park houses the Nanda Devi sanctuary situated at the trail of the Nanda Devi peak, 7,817 m (25,646 ft) a glacial basin is heaven for the trekkers & climbers, wildlife enthusiasts, biologist and scientist. Together with the nearby Valley of Flowers National Park to the northwest, it is a designated World Heritage Site. Both parks are encompassed in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (223,674 hact) which is further surrounded by a buffer zone (5,148.57 sqr. km)
Most of the trekking are done the alpine style where you just carry the small personal bag and rest it taken care by mules and porters. Some trek routes ends in Sangla valley of Himachal, taking you to a different land and make the tour quite an interesting.
Jim Corbett National Park is one of the oldest national park in India, named after the hunter and naturalist Jim Corbett who played a key role in its establishment, the park is a protected area for the critically endangered Bengal tiger of India also contains about 500 different species of plants and a diverse variety of flora and fauna.
