Before 1974, the only caravans crossing through Ladakh were those traveling along the SILK ROUTE. Today, other groups are discovering the infinity of these high lands, for less commercial reasons. These are the tourists.
A unique way of exploring the remote region is by 4X4 vehicle. Since it was opened in 1974 when the Mahindra Jeeps were the only 4X4 vehicles available for tourist, thus it carried the name “JEEP SAFARI” and today it can be done in any big modern vehicle on much better roads.
Ladakh has the BEST MAINTAINED VEHICLES compared to any region of India. Reason; most of the vehicles are droved by the owner themselves thus they are kept highly maintained; spic-n-span. Any new modern vehicle fit for these roads are launched in India, it is bound to get into these roads in no time. Today a variety of vehicle do the Jeep Safari like; Gypsy, Sumo, Qualis, Scorpio or Toyota Innova.
A typical Jeep Safari tour involves drive of 4 to 12 hrs a day on this mountainous region from a day short tour to three weeks intensive tour. Overnight stays are in Hotels, Guest houses, Adventure camps, local houses and sometimes in monasteries. Ladakh is also called the land of high passes, thus several motorable high passes involves to reach remote regions of which the Khadunla pass is the WORLD’S HIGHEST MOTORABLE ROAD at an amazing altitude of 18380 Fts. above the sea level.
Ladakh is assessable by road from Srinagar over the high pass of Zogi-la 11500 Fts. and from Manali over the high pass of Rohtang la and Taglang-la pass 17469 Fts. Both of the roads remains closed during the winters cutting the area from rest of the world for 6 months.
