Himachal is situated in the heart of western Himalayas. The state is bordered by Jammu and Kashmir in the North, and Uttar Pradesh in the South-East. Haryana is in the South and Punjab is in the West. Himachal is located between 30"22' and 30"12' north latitude and between 75"47' and 79"4' east longitude. It is a mountainous state with altitudes ranging from 350 to 7000 meters (1050 ft. to 21000 ft.) above the sea level.
In 1966, Himachal Pradesh comprised a nucleus of 31 ‘native states’ that had combined their destinies in 1948 after millennia of internecine strife. These tiny hill states enjoyed relative affluence owing to their strategic location on the trading routes between Central Asia and the Indian peninsula. Alexander the Great invaded north – west India in 327 BCE and penetrated as far as the Beas River but was pushed back by Chandragupta II, the founder of north India’s classic Hindu dynasty.
In 1966 Lahaul & Spiti, which had come under Punjab administration at Independence, became part of Himachal Pradesh (Land of the Snow Ranges), which attained full statehood in 1971.
Inner line permits is required in certain remote areas to visit which is easy to obtain locally at a nominal fee.
